Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) is a newly developed, very promising screening modality being used as an adjunct to full-field digital mammography (FFDM). Two scientific trials have shown that the addition of ABUS to FFDM enables radiologists to detect 36% more cancers in asymptomatic women with dense breasts.

This lecture describes the technique of ABUS in detail and correlates ABUS findings with large format subgross histopathology images of normal breast tissue and benign and malignant breast lesions. AI (CAD) helps the radiologist to read consecutive 2 mm coronal slices of the entire breast from the nipple to the chest wall by shortening reading time and increasing reading accuracy.
